Diagnostic Nasal Endoscopy

Diagnostic Nasal Endoscopy (DNE) is a minimally invasive procedure used to examine the nasal passages and sinus openings with the help of a thin, rigid or flexible endoscope equipped with a light source and camera. It allows ENT specialists to view detailed images of nasal structures, helping in the diagnosis of various nasal and sinus conditions.

Causes

This procedure is usually recommended when a patient has persistent nasal or sinus symptoms despite routine treatment. Common causes include chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps, allergic rhinitis, recurrent nasal bleeding, deviated nasal septum, tumors, or unexplained nasal obstruction. It is also used to evaluate infections, trauma, and post-surgical healing.

Symptoms

  • Nasal blockage or congestion
  • Frequent sneezing or itching
  • Persistent nasal discharge (clear or purulent)
  • Loss or reduction of smell (anosmia or hyposmia)
  • Recurrent headaches or facial pain
  • Unexplained nosebleeds (epistaxis)
  • Postnasal drip or foul-smelling nasal discharge

Treatment

DNE is primarily a diagnostic tool but can also be used for minor therapeutic purposes, such as suctioning secretions, removing small polyps, or controlling bleeding. After the procedure, treatment depends on the underlying cause—this may include medications like antibiotics, antihistamines, nasal steroid sprays, or saline irrigations. In some cases, surgical intervention such as Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) may be advised.
